Product Description

The original “Powder” isopod—the one that started it all.

Powder Blue Isopods are the foundation of the entire Porcellionides pruinosus hobby. Hardy, adaptable, and impressively productive, they’ve earned their reputation as the go-to species for both beginners and seasoned keepers.

They may not be rare—but they are essential.

Overview

Native to the Mediterranean region, this species has become one of the most widely kept isopods in the world.

Their name loosely translates to “little pig covered in frost,” which feels oddly accurate once you see their soft, dusted blue-grey appearance. That signature “powdery” look isn’t just for aesthetics—it helps with moisture control and gives them a subtle, understated charm.

They are fast, efficient, and quietly take care of business.

Appearance

Powder Blues display a soft blue-grey colouration, ranging from pale silver tones to deeper slate hues depending on the individual and moult stage.

Just before moulting, they develop a slightly more vibrant, almost metallic sheen—briefly reminding you they’re more than just your average clean-up crew.

Juveniles start off more muted and gradually develop their colour over time, giving you a front-row seat to their transformation.

They cannot roll into a ball. Instead, they rely on speed—and they are very, very good at it.

Care & Conditions

This is about as straightforward as isopod care gets.

They are comfortable anywhere between 18–29°C, with typical room temperature being perfectly suitable. Humidity should sit around 50–70%, making them more tolerant of drier setups than many other species.

A moisture gradient is ideal. One side damp, one side drier. They will handle the rest themselves.

They are forgiving, adaptable, and not easily offended by minor mistakes.

Diet & Feeding

Powder Blues are enthusiastic eaters with a strong work ethic.

Their core diet consists of leaf litter and decaying wood. This should always be available.

Supplement with vegetables such as carrot, courgette, or sweet potato, along with occasional protein sources like fish flakes or dried shrimp.

Calcium is essential. Cuttlebone, limestone, or crushed eggshells should always be present to support healthy moulting.

A small note of restraint: they will eat almost anything, but overfeeding leads to unwanted guests. Keep it controlled.

Enclosure Setup

A simple setup is more than enough for this species.

Provide a moisture-retentive substrate with some depth, along with cork bark, leaf litter, and a dedicated damp area using moss.

Ventilation should be moderate to prevent stagnant conditions, but not so excessive that the enclosure dries out.

They are not demanding—but they do appreciate a well-balanced environment.

Behaviour

Powder Blue Isopods are active, fast, and far less shy than many species.

They are often visible during the day, regularly exploring, feeding, and interacting. When disturbed, they scatter with impressive speed—blink and they’re gone.

They are social, non-aggressive, and thrive in groups.

In short, they are busy.

Breeding

Prolific is an understatement.

Under suitable conditions, colonies establish quickly and expand at a steady—sometimes surprising—rate. Young mature fast and begin reproducing early, creating a self-sustaining population with minimal effort.

If you’re looking for something that “just works,” this is it.

Bioactive Use

This is where Powder Blues truly shine.

They are one of the most effective bioactive cleanup crews available, suitable for tropical, temperate, and even semi-arid setups.

They process waste quickly, manage decaying material, and help maintain a healthy enclosure ecosystem. Their soft bodies also make them an occasional snack for insectivorous animals—something they compensate for with sheer numbers.

Reliable, efficient, and always working.

Why Choose Powder Blue Isopods?

They are not rare. They are not flashy. They are not complicated.

They are, however, one of the most useful, reliable, and widely trusted species in the hobby.

Every collection starts somewhere. This is where most start—and many never stop keeping them.
