Porcellio Werneri (Greek Shield / Space Pods)

Origin: Greece
Temperature: 17–26°C
Humidity: 50–65%
Adult Size: Up to 20 mm
Difficulty: Medium
Rarity: Uncommon

Product Description:
Porcellio Werneri, also known as Greek Shield or Space Pods, is a relatively large, uniquely shaped isopod prized for its mild temperament and adaptability. With a dark grey to black body and a distinctive milk-white edge resembling a shield or “skirt,” this species is visually striking and a popular choice for terrarium enthusiasts. Ideal for soil aeration and detritus cleanup, P. Werneri is well-suited to temperate setups and requires moderate care.

Appearance & Behaviour:

  • Flat, oval, shield-like body with white-edged margin
  • Deep grey to black coloration with lighter outer rim
  • Adults reach up to 2 cm
  • Antennae long and sensitive; seven body segments with strong last pair of legs
  • Mild temperament, minimally aggressive, can be hand-fed
  • Territorial tendencies; benefit from spacious enclosures
  • Seasonal breeders, juveniles appear during specific times of the year

Care & Conditions:

  • Substrate: Organic-rich mix of coconut fiber and peat moss with good moisture retention
  • Enclosure: Minimum 12 L for starter colony, 25 L for larger populations; ample airflow required
  • Humidity: 50–65%, maintain a moist corner covering ~1/3 of the enclosure
  • Temperature: 17–26°C
  • Décor & Hides: Cork bark, leaf litter (pesticide-free), lotus seed pods, egg crates for hiding
  • Ventilation: High airflow essential; use multiple vents or mesh lids

Diet & Feeding:

  • Primary Foods: Decaying leaves, fruits, vegetables, greens, rotting wood
  • Protein Supplements: Fish flakes, dried shrimp, dried minnows (twice weekly)
  • Calcium: Cuttlebone, limestone, crushed eggshells, oyster shell

Breeding:

  • Seasonal; females brood eggs for specific periods annually
  • Provide calcium, protein, and a stable environment to encourage reproduction
  • Territorial males require adequate space to prevent conflict

Suitability:

  • Good for keepers looking for a visually distinct, medium-difficulty Porcellio
  • Ideal for bioactive terrariums or soil-aerating cleanup crews
  • Less suitable for complete beginners due to seasonal breeding and territorial behaviour

Value:
A larger, rare-looking isopod with striking coloration and armor-like body structure. With proper care, colonies can thrive for multiple years.
