🟢 Easiest / Most Forgiving (Beginner-proof)
These tolerate mistakes, fluctuating humidity, and are generally fast breeders:
Armadillidium vulgare 'Magic Potion' (Japan)
- Hardiest on your list
- Wide temp/humidity tolerance (15–27°C, 50–70%)
- Fast breeding once established
- Very active + visible
- Best “first designer isopod”
👉 If you want success + visibility, this is the safest pick.
Armadillidium granulatum 'White Pearl'
- Easy, large, forgiving species
- High humidity tolerance but still adaptable
- Good breeder and stable colony builder
- Less “fussy” than Cubaris types
👉 Best if you want a big, hardy display colony.
Cubaris murina
- One of the toughest Cubaris-type isopods
- Very adaptable and productive
- Excellent bioactive cleanup crew
- Not very “rare-looking” but extremely reliable
👉 Best “bridge species” into Cubaris.
🟡 Intermediate (Needs stability, but manageable)
Armadillidium maculatum (Zebra Isopods)
- Moderate humidity (70–80%) but likes airflow
- Easy once stable, but sensitive to poor ventilation
- Fast breeder compared to Cubaris
- Very visible and aesthetic
👉 Great if you want patterned isopods that are still fairly easy.
Cubaris sp. 'Panda King'
- Humidity-loving (70–80%)
- Needs stable moisture + calcium
- Breeds fairly well once settled
- More shy than Armadillidium species
👉 Good first “real Cubaris experience”.
Armadillidium granulatum (including morphs like White Pearl)
- Very prolific
- Can produce large broods
- Slightly more moisture-dependent than vulgare
- Still very beginner-friendly overall
🔴 Advanced / Sensitive Cubaris
Cubaris sp. 'Rubber Ducky'
- High humidity (70–90%) + limestone environment
- Slow breeding, long establishment time
- Very shy, burrowing, stress-sensitive
- High calcium requirement
- Expensive + status species
👉 This is a collector-level isopod, not a starter culture.
Cubaris sp. 'Red Pak Chong'
- Tropical limestone cave species
- Medium care but still Cubaris-sensitive
- Needs high humidity + stable temps
- Moderate breeding speed (for Cubaris)
👉 Easier than Rubber Duckies, but still “intermediate+”.
Cubaris sp. 'Panda King Pink'
- Similar care to Panda King
- Humid, stable, low disturbance needed
- Better breeding than most Cubaris
- Still slower than Armadillidium
🧠 Big Picture (what your whole list tells me)
You’re working across 3 clear “care worlds”:
1. Armadillidium (easy → medium)
- Magic Potion
- Zebra
- Granulatum
👉 Fast breeding, visible, forgiving
2. Cubaris “beginner Cubaris”
- Panda King
- Cubaris murina
👉 Humid but still manageable
3. Premium Cubaris (advanced)
- Rubber Ducky
- Red Pak Chong
- high-end morphs
👉 Stable cave-like conditions required, slow growth
🏁 If you want a simple recommendation
- First isopod ever: Magic Potion
- Best display beginner colony: Zebra or White Pearl
- First Cubaris: Panda King or Cubaris murina
- Showpiece challenge species: Rubber Ducky or Red Pak Chong
