Origin: Thailand (possibly also Malaysia)
Temperature: 24–28 °C (75–82 °F)
Humidity: 55–70 %
Adult Size: Up to 20 mm
Difficulty: Easy (intermediate recommended)
Rarity: Uncommon
Lifespan: 2–3 years
Scientific Name: Cubaris sp. “Orange Freezy”

Description:
A larger, visually striking Cubaris with bright orange coloration and semi-transparent “skirts” along body edges. Chunky, wide body makes them satisfying to observe. Shy and nocturnal, they are less visible during the day but display classic Cubaris behaviors like conglobation (rolling into a ball).

Appearance & Behaviour:

  • Larger Cubaris species (~20 mm)
  • Wide, cuboid body shape
  • Bright orange with translucent margins (“frozen” appearance)
  • Nocturnal and shy; mostly hidden during the day
  • Calm temperament; defensive response is freezing or conglobation

Habitat & Care:

  • Container: 6–12 L terrarium or sealed container
  • Substrate: 5–8 cm deep soil-based mix
    • Organic topsoil
    • Rotting white wood (important for nutrition)
    • Leaf litter
    • Limestone chunks
  • Ventilation: Moderate; avoid stagnant air
  • Temperature: 24–28 °C; stable conditions preferred
  • Humidity: 55–70 %; can tolerate uniform moisture, but a slightly damp zone is beneficial
  • Hides: Cork bark, rotten wood, moss coverage

Feeding & Nutrition:

  • Diet: Detritivore; leaf litter, decaying wood, vegetables
  • Vegetables: Carrots, squash, radishes, sweet potato
  • Protein: Freeze-dried shrimp, fish flakes, or insects, 1–2× per week
  • Calcium: Cuttlebone, limestone chunks, crushed eggshells, oyster shell
  • Feeding Notes: Remove uneaten fresh foods to prevent mold in humid conditions

Breeding:

  • Slow breeders; may take several months to see offspring
  • Consistent temperature and humidity support reproduction
  • Colonies grow steadily once established

Suitability:

  • Best for: Keepers with some Cubaris experience, intermediate hobbyists, those seeking visually striking species
  • Less suited for: Complete beginners or those unable to maintain consistent tropical conditions
