Description:
Murina Mandarin is a visually striking isopod, prized for its vibrant orange coloration. Despite its delicate appearance, it is hardy and low-maintenance when proper conditions are provided.

Appearance & Behaviour:

  • Bright orange body, small size (~1.2 cm)
  • Shy and nocturnal; hides during the day and more active at night
  • Social species; thrives in established colonies
  • Prefers to burrow and seek shelter under substrate or decor

Habitat & Care:

  • Enclosure: Well-ventilated, with a moisture gradient to replicate forest floor conditions
  • Substrate: Mix of orchid bark, sphagnum moss, earthworm castings; top layer of rotting leaves and decaying wood
  • Temperature: Warm 17–28 °C
  • Humidity: Medium-high (55–70 %), keep substrate moist for molting
  • Hides: Cork bark, moss, and wood pieces for shelter

Diet & Nutrition:

  • Supplements: Fresh vegetables, fruits, greens, fish food, dried shrimp
  • Calcium sources: Limestone or cuttlebone for exoskeleton development
  • Feeding approach: Small, regular feedings; avoid mold growth by removing uneaten food

Breeding:

  • Prefers stable warm and humid conditions
  • Breeding occurs reliably in established colonies
  • Juveniles emerge fully formed, requiring no special care

Bioactive Use & Suitability:

  • Excellent for terrariums mimicking tropical forest floors
  • Acts as a small but efficient cleanup crew
