Armadillidium espanyoli “Marbelized”

Origin: Spain
Temperature: 20–28 °C
Humidity: 50–70 % (with a moisture gradient; prefers mostly drier conditions)
Adult Size: 1.4–1.6 cm
Difficulty: Medium
Rarity: Uncommon
Lifespan: 2–3 years

Description:
A small-to-medium Spanish pillbug with striking white marbled patterns across a dark base. Each individual displays a unique marble-like design. Popular with collectors for display purposes, they are visually attractive but require patience during the initial establishment period before breeding reliably.

Appearance & Behaviour:

  • Smooth, domed pillbug shape
  • Dark base colour with variable white marbled patterns
  • Rolled juveniles already show marbling, which intensifies with age
  • Peaceful, calm, and moderately active
  • Burrowing and hiding is common; not climbers
  • Rolls into a tight ball when disturbed (conglobation)

Habitat & Care:

  • Enclosure: Medium container (10–15 L), low to medium ventilation
  • Substrate: Organic topsoil, leaf litter, sphagnum peat moss, decaying hardwood, calcium source (cuttlebone, crushed limestone)
  • Moisture: Moist zone (~30–40 %) for hydration and molting; majority drier (~60–70 %)
  • Temperature: Room temperature works well (20–28 °C)
  • Décor & Hides: Cork bark, hardwood pieces, flat stones, moss patches in humid area

Diet & Nutrition:

  • Detritivore: Leaf litter, decaying hardwood, cork bark
  • Supplementary: Vegetables (carrot, courgette, cucumber, sweet potato), fish flakes, pollen, occasional fruit
  • Calcium: Essential for exoskeleton; provide cuttlebone, crushed eggshells, or limestone

Breeding:

  • Females carry eggs in a marsupium; juveniles emerge fully formed
  • Gestation period ~60 days; initial establishment is slower
  • Brood sizes moderate; steady reproduction once established
  • Stable temperature, moderate humidity, calcium, hiding spots, and minimal disturbance improve breeding

Bioactive Use & Suitability:

  • Good for semi-arid or Mediterranean-style bioactive setups
  • Function as decomposers, burrowers, and low-climbing cleanup crew
  • Visually appealing in display enclosures
  • Not ideal for high-humidity tropical setups or for keepers seeking rapid colony growth
  • Patience is needed for initial establishment

Care Level: Low to medium; forgiving once established but slower to settle

Value: Attractive, unique marbled patterning without high maintenance; solid addition to collections and display colonies
